Label Reading




  • Check serving size first.
  • Use % Daily Value (%DV) as a quick guide: 5% DV or less = low, 20% DV or more = high.
    Choose
    higher %DV for fiber, potassium, iron, calcium, vitamin D—and lower for saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars.


Portion & Plating

  • Fill ½ your plate with non-starchy vegetables first.
  • Use hand-based guides (approximate): palm = protein portion; cupped hand = grains/starches; thumb = fats.
  • Eat mindfully (slow down, check in at 80% full).


Healthy Swap Ideas

White rice → brown rice/farro/quinoa (more fiber).

Sugary cereal → oatmeal with fruit/nuts.

Sour cream/mayo → plain Greek yogurt in dips/spreads.

Processed meats → beans, lentils, fish, or poultry.

Soda/juice → sparkling water with citrus.
